I recently started decluttering my skincare table and noticed a few products that have actually went passed its period-after-opening! While some of them can be used for other purposes, some just really needs to go to the bin. Here are the few products that I have gathered and before removing them I thought should share my thoughts on them !
- COSRX One Step Original Pimple Clear Pad
This was a product that I enjoyed a lot during 2017 and 2018 and this was my second tub! I loved the convenience of the product as it already comes with a pad soaked with toner solution. I also loved how soft and refreshing it leaves my skin each time. I used to get a lot of blackheads and whiteheads around my forehead and nose area therefore I had the habit to use this clear pad every morning as a gentle way to cleanse and exfoliate my skin. I had no bad reaction towards this product at all. My another favourite method to use this product is whenever I have pimple with pus I just this pad to exfoliate the top layer and immediately place a pimple patch to absorb the pus and heal the pimple quickly overnight. Honestly, it worked like magic each time.
Slowly my skin got a lot better and my skincare shifted to a much gentler approach focusing more on respecting our skin barrier. That was when I stopped using exfoliating toners daily and started using hydrating toners. I still enjoy using toner pads but probably use it weekly and not daily. I just purchased the Neogen Bio-Peel Gauze Peeling Green Tea Face Pads and I can’t wait to try it out!
Probably not as I would love to explore other products and I’m enjoying more hydrating toners now!
2. Pyunkang Yul Moisture Cream
Ahh this product. I bought this cream the same time with its toner essence finished the toner within 3 months but the cream expired before even using half of the cream. I remember I used this product daily for a good 2 to 3 months and have been struggling with the same problem each time which really puts me off. I had problem opening the tub each time. Yeap, you read that right. I don’t think I have read anyone else with such issue, it might be just my tub that came faulty T^T I had no problem with its formulation and have been enjoying this cream as it’s a very simple moisturizer with no nonsense ingredients that doesn’t feel heavy on the skin. However, because I have experienced difficulty opening up the tub each time, I just slowly forgotten about the cream. Honestly, this really proves how important are product packaging are. Now instead of using it as a face cream I plan to move it to a different tub and use it as a body lotion, hand cream or neck cream.
Never. So much better creams out there with better product packaging.
3. COSRX Snail Cream
I contemplated before purchasing this product as previously I had problems with products containing snail extracts. Snail products were always over moisturizing for my skin and instead of ‘’treating my acne’’ it always leaves my skin more clogged causing more breakouts in the end. However, this was a snail extract product that I really enjoyed! I really like how silky and moisturizing it leaves my skin. Also, it leaves a really nice and healthy glow. Most importantly, I did not experience any pore clogging problems even while I used it in the humid weather in Malaysia. I almost finished using the product but because I was testing out other moisturizers, I slowly neglected this product. As it comes in a tub, I also don’t think it’s very hygienic to be used on the face after leaving aside for far too long. Other than its hygiene issue, I also did not see any improvements in reducing acne scaring which it claimed to do. So, I now use it as a neck cream! No waste no waste.
No, while this was a good product I think I prefer creams that are less slimmy and creams that absorbs faster into the skin.
4. Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant
I mentioned this product not too long ago on one of my Instagram post. While clearing out I found out this product has passed its recommended usage time of 12months after opening. I always enjoyed using chemical exfoliators more than physical exfoliators as they are much more gentle on the skin and works better. My first BHA product was actually the COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, despite the amazing hyped up reviews I still get blackheads regularly even after using the product daily. That’s where I decided to try the Paula Choice’s BHA liquid exfoliant. I used this product regularly in the beginning especially around my nose area where I get the most blackheads. However, I don’t recall seeing massive improvements and I still get clogged pores regularly. Recently with the increased usage of more hydrating products I began to see more improvements in the reduction of blackheads. I believe in the power of BHA but honestly, I can’t say it have done much for my skin. So I will be staying out from BHA’s for now and I plan to try out other chemical exfoliators instead. I recently purchased the Nakeup Face PHA Water Tox Ampoule and can’t wait to try it out!
No. Did not see reduction in blackheads even after constant usage.
5. Fushi Tamanu Oil
I bought this product after watching Liah Yoo’s video about how she cleared her acne scars with tamanu oil. Liah did an amazing explanation on how greatly beneficial tamanu oils are for the skin and you can checkout her video here. Right after, I bought a tamanu oil through amazon! I was so excited to see amazing results from it! I started using the oil daily as my last step of my skincare. I probably used it for a good two weeks before deciding it’s not for me. The oil was thick, and it does not smell good at all. I also did not notice any massive improvements in my acne scarring, probably did not use it long enough to see improvements. With no actual results I feel it’s not worth the unpleasant experience. Also, prior to this review I gave this product a second try and it left my skin with a minor rash. It might be this particular tamanu oil product from this manufacturer that didn’t work well for my skin. I still believe in tamanu oil and still am interested in trying out other product with this amazing ingredient! Sioris and Krave beauty recently launched their moisturizer with tamanu oil and I am so intrigued to try it. As for this particular Fushi Organic Tamanu Oil, I am letting you go officially.
Never! I just really did not enjoy the smell and how thick the oil feels on the skin.
6. The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2%
The Ordinary was a brand that definitely gained lots of attention for being a skincare brand with high quality formulations yet still being so affordable. I decided to tryout their products! This exfoliating serum only cost £5.50. As you can see I used a good amount of the serum. While I can’t say the product have massively improved my skin condition I slowly stopped using the product as I just didn’t enjoy the smell of the product. It has a strong chemical scent to the product and even my boyfriend also said that it smells like something had gone bad. There are way better products that delivers better/similar results with much better overall experience. I feel the entire process of using a skincare product should be enjoyable and the fact that it smells really bad just makes me not want to use it despite being good for the skin. Eventually I stopped reaching out for the product and it have now expired. I will definitely not repurchase this product.
No ! Really unpleasant chemical smell.
7. Bare Minerals Prep Step SPF 50 Mineral Shield Lotion
You know the feeling of not wanting to let a product go because you have spent so much money on it? Yeap, that’s me for this product. I always wanted to try a good physical sunscreen and this product was part of the list. I remember I was walking on the street of London one day and decided to try this product. I used it the next day and realized instantly I really don’t like this product. This sunscreen leaves an oily feeling that really feels really uncomfortable. It’s the type of sunscreen that I know my skin will be so clogged by just using it for a day. I probably tried using the product around 10 times and still kept it in my collection because its just too expensive to throw it away. Its now expired and time to bin it. Never purchasing that product again. Honestly, Korean and Japanese makes the best sunscreens!
8. Skinfood Black Sugar Mask
This was a product that I used to like a lot! The main reason why I stopped using this product was because I find it really abrasive to be used for the face. Okay, to be fair you can actually add more water, dissolve more of the sugar before applying on the face. But… that would also mean it will not exfoliate as well anymore. Anyhow after discovering chemical exfoliaters such as AHA and BHAs I just never looked back. This was my third tub and now instead of using the scrub on my face, I use it as a body scrub! No waste no waste. I also tried the Skinfood rice mask as well and I really enjoyed that mask as it was definitely much more gentle on the skin and I always fancy any products that can help brighten the skin 😉 Now that skinfood is closing down, slowly we won’t be seeing their products anymore.
No! Too harsh for the face.
9. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream
I love using this cream. Although the cream looks thick, it does not suffocate my skin and I did not breakout from the cream at all. I love how the cream was formulated with colloidal oatmeal which is known to help restore and strengthen the skin barrier with continuous usage. The cream has no scent to it and the ingredients are so good that even children and babies can use them! I finished 2 small tubes before deciding on getting this big tub. Because I constantly try new products I just couldn’t finish this huge tub within a year. The tub is definitely less hygienic compared to the squeezed tubes too. Now I plan to just use the cream as a body cream, no waste no waste. Getting the bigger tub was definitely my biggest mistake! I definitely recommend this cream specifically to anyone with dry skin that is looking for a simple cream that moisturize the skin really well with no greasy after-feeling.
Though I like it I will say no as I love looking out for creams that are multifunctional. For example, the Neogen cream that moisturize the skin well and also brightens it with vitamin C and creams like laroche-posay that also contains cicaplast that can help heal the skin.
10. Innisfree Eye Cream
Eye cream is surely a category that I explored the least and have a problem up-keeping the habit of daily usage. However, I do believe in the power of continuous usage of eye creams can prevent wrinkle formation around the eyes. Nothing too special about this cream but I am using this cream mainly to prevent wrinkles by keeping the eye area well moisturized. I got this eye cream after watching Joan’s video on eye creams! This cream is very moisturizing but it does not cause any milia issues to me at all. You only need a very small amount each time. That’s why I couldn’t finish this product even after a year. I already got another one in hand and this is definitely lasting for another year hahaha
Although I liked using this cream, I don’t think I will be repurchasing it as I would love to try some other eye creams!
Thank you very much for reading my reviews! As usual these are based on my personal experience and I hope it can help you before deciding to purchase them 🙂
